The Finnish Red Cross Blood Service's hemostasis laboratory has been functioning as the national reference laboratory since 1957. Our services include a comprehensive, up-to-date set of tests for detection of bleeding disorders and thrombophilia. During almost 60 years of operation, we have collected an extensive amount of information on hereditary and acquired conditions causing bleeding disorders and thrombophilia.
To make the work of clinicians easier, our range of services includes comprehensive group testing required for the basic examination of bleeding disorders and thrombophilia. The available tests are described in the laboratory manual. Our referral forms and bleeding questionnaire are available online on this website in Finnish and in Swedish.
Our laboratory staff is highly trained and specialised in the special features of hemostasis testing in particular. Our experienced medical experts interpret all the laboratory results on the basis of the referral data and give a written statement on the results. If necessary, they help the treating physician to choose appropriate tests and to plan treatment accordingly.
We have validated the preanalytical variables related to sample handling and transportation. Almost all hemostasis tests have been accredited (FINAS T119, EN ISO/IEC 17025, EN ISO 15189). In addition, we define the reference range for each assay. We participate in external international quality assurance rounds to ensure the functionality of our methods and the accuracy of our laboratory results. In diagnostics we follow the current international recommendations.
