Blood donors needed – please make sure your gift arrives on time!

12/3/2018 11:10

Christmas is a time of giving and receiving. The Finnish Red Cross Blood Service is preparing for Christmas with a plan that guarantees a win for the recipient. You, too, can help. Red blood cells donated today will still be usable at Christmas, which means that it could be your blood that saves someone’s Christmas this year.

Donating blood just before the holidays is a tradition for many donors. Traditions are important, but the Blood Service would prefer for donations to be spread evenly throughout the festive season.

Approximately 4,000 donations are needed every week, regardless of the time of year. The days between Christmas and New Year and between New Year and Epiphany as well as the time around Finland's Independence Day are often the most challenging. There are fewer days on which the Blood Service is open during these weeks, especially this year, as most of the holidays fall on weekdays. This is why nearly 1,000 donors are needed each day on which the Blood Service is open.

Just like sending presents by post, this gift, too, can be delivered well in advance. Red blood cells donated now could save someone during the holidays. Alternatively, you can choose express delivery just before Christmas, when platelets in particular are needed. They only survive five days.

The Blood Service will open on two extra days around the long Christmas holidays.

Some Blood Service Centres are open on Saturday, 22 December (Lahti, Jyväskylä, Oulu, Seinäjoki, Tampere and Turku). Blood donation events will also be held in Varkaus and Lohja that day. On Boxing Day, 26 December, blood can be donated at the Kivihaka and Sanomatalo Blood Service Centres in Helsinki, the Espoo Blood Service Centre in the Iso Omena shopping centre and in Kuopio, Oulu, Tampere and Turku. A blood donation event will also be held in Tuusula on Boxing Day.

On New Year's Eve, Monday, 31 December, all Blood Service Centres except those in Seinäjoki and Oulu will be open but with reduced hours. There will also be blood donation events in Riihimäki, Klaukkala, Aura, Raahe, Akaa and Alavus on New Year's Eve. There will be no opportunity to donate blood on New Year's Day.
